North Carolina’s odd nickname, the “Tar Heel State,” may not make it sound like an appealing place to visit. However, nicknames can be deceiving, and North Carolina can be a great vacation destination. Here are some reasons you should check it out.
1. Beaches
There are plenty of North Carolina coast rentals along the Atlantic Ocean. There are all sorts of fun things you can do at or near the beach. You can take a bike ride or walk along the shore. You can go fishing or splash around in the water. The lighthouses up and down the coast make for wonderful photo opportunities, and some are even open for visitors.
2. History
North Carolina is one of the oldest states in the country, having been one of the original 13 colonies. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about the American Revolution and the Civil War. At one point, North Carolina was also a haven for pirates, and you can learn more about their history in the state as well.
3. Movie Sets
North Carolina’s verdant landscape makes it an attractive setting for motion pictures, especially those set in rural or remote locations. For example, it stood in for both Katniss’ home and the arena in Panem’s capital city in “The Hunger Games” series. Today, you can take “Hunger Games”-themed tours of the sites where the movies were filmed. You may be able to take tours of sites of other films as well.
4. Scenic Drives
The most popular drive in the United States is the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Take in the scenic vistas while winding your way through the rolling hills or stop to explore one of the many hiking trails.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is breathtaking at all times of the year, but if you want to enjoy the most colorful foliage, the best time to visit is in the fall.
